Celtic Dynamics conducted a detailed B Corp Energy Audit for TMS Car Storage, a specialist vehicle storage company preparing for B Corp certification. The audit evaluated the company’s energy consumption patterns, identified major energy users, and recommended practical, cost-effective improvements.

By aligning with the B Corp Environmental Impact Area and wider sustainability goals, the project provided TMS Car Storage with a clear roadmap to enhance energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and strengthen its ESG performance.

Objectives of the Audit

The audit aimed to help TMS Car Storage make measurable improvements while supporting its certification ambitions. The main objectives were to: assess total energy use across operations and facilities; identify opportunities for energy savings and carbon reduction; recommend solutions that balance impact, feasibility, and cost; and provide insights to support the company’s B Corp certification and environmental reporting.

This approach ensured that all findings aligned with the B Impact Assessment’s Environmental section, helping the company demonstrate transparency and measurable progress.

Methodology

Celtic Dynamics followed a systematic and transparent process in line with B Corp audit guidance and ISO 50002 best practices: a detailed site visit and data review alongside analysis of 12 months of energy consumption data; energy use assessment to quantify and map total usage by process and equipment; carbon footprint calculation covering Scope 1 (direct fuel use) and Scope 2 (electricity) emissions using UK grid emission factors; and benchmarking against similar facilities and relevant EPC energy standards.

This comprehensive approach allowed Celtic Dynamics to identify inefficiencies, high-consumption areas, and achievable opportunities for improvement.

Energy Consumption and Carbon Profile

The audit revealed a clear view of how energy was being used across the facility. Key systems such as heating, lighting, and charging infrastructure represented the largest portions of total energy demand.

Key findings included a detailed breakdown of total and monthly energy consumption; significant energy users including HVAC systems, lighting, and EV charging points; calculated Scope 1 and 2 emissions identifying high-impact areas; and visual analysis using Sankey charts and cost profiles showing where the biggest efficiency gains could be achieved.

This evidence-based insight provided TMS Car Storage with the clarity needed to plan targeted, cost-effective improvements.

Opportunities for Improvement

Several improvement opportunities were identified to enhance energy performance and reduce carbon emissions.

Lighting Upgrades

Replacing older fittings with LED lighting would deliver immediate savings in energy costs, improve light quality, and reduce maintenance requirements.

Heating Efficiency

Upgrading to efficient heat pumps or zoned heating systems would reduce unnecessary energy use. Implementing time and occupancy controls could further minimise wasted energy.

Renewable Energy Integration

Introducing solar PV systems would help offset reliance on grid electricity and lower overall carbon emissions, targeting 30-60% renewable coverage in the medium term.

Energy Management and Monitoring

Establishing an Energy Action Team and introducing real-time monitoring would enable continuous improvement and data-driven decision-making.

Implementation and Next Steps

Following the audit, Celtic Dynamics provided a detailed action plan for implementation. The plan prioritised quick wins such as lighting upgrades, while scheduling medium- and long-term projects around renewable energy and process optimisation.

The company was encouraged to assign internal ownership to a sustainability or energy champion; apply for local and national funding opportunities; track energy and carbon savings through performance dashboards; and reassess progress every two to three years in line with B Corp recertification cycles.

This proactive approach ensures that energy efficiency and carbon reduction remain embedded in TMS Car Storage’s long-term strategy.

Results and Impact

By following the audit’s recommendations, TMS Car Storage is positioned to achieve measurable improvements in both environmental performance and operational efficiency.

Expected outcomes include significant reductions in energy use and associated emissions; cost savings through reduced electricity consumption; improved building performance and occupant comfort; and strengthened readiness for B Corp certification.

These results demonstrate how targeted energy audits can accelerate sustainability goals while improving overall business resilience.
